Shree Kabir Council
When the Mahant of Satguru Kabir Ashram of Jamnagar, India, Shree Ramswaroop Das Ji Saheb was in Mauritius , he initiated the idea of forming a new Kabir Pantha Association. He proposed the name of Shree Kabir Council Mauritius at that time which eventually was founded in 1973 headed by Mahant Tulsidass Bucktowar and dewan Hemantdass Budhoo. Shree Kabir Council was registered by Mahant Komaldass Brizmohundas in 1975, and since then this society has slowly been coming up with activities of propagating the philosophy of Shree Kabir Saheb. In 1983 the members of the society showed the interest of constructing an ashram and for this purpose Shree Lockdass Bucktowar, son of the late Mahant Tulsidass Bucktowar who left for the heavenly abode in 1981, donated half a "bigha" of land situated at La Caverne No. 2, Vacoas. Mahant Ramswaroopdas Ji Saheb again visited Mauritius in 1988 and during this visit he not only donated Rs 51,000, but also motivated the members for donations to construct the ashram. The commitment of some of the members to contribute sums of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 saw the foundation of the ashram being laid in 1990. In 1992 a hall for performing religious ceremonies, a guest room, store, kitchen and a dinning room was ready. This new ashram was inaugurated on the auspicious day of the Kabir Pragataye Diwas in June 1992 and eventually more rooms were added to the existing building as it is today.Mahant Hemantdass was the Mahant of Shree Kabir Council till his "satlok gaman" in 1997.
The next Mahant of the Council was Mahant Sant Sarveshwar Das Shastri from Varanasi, India. He reached Mauritius in November 1999 and since then he has been performing the "mahanti vidhi" at the ashram.
Today, an "anandi chawka arati" is performed every month to celebrate the "purnima". Two main celebrations are for the "magha purnima" commonly known as the "Antar Dhyan Diwas" in the month of February and the "jyesth purnima" popularly known as the Kabir Prakatya Diwas in the month of June. Morning and evening "sandhya arati" forms part of the daily programme. There are regular bahajan and satsang programmes in the Mandir as well as in the branches of the Council. Recently, Shree Kabir Council and two other Kabir Associations came together for the publishing of a quarterly religious journal on the philosophy and teachings of Satguru Kabir Saheb - the "Satya Guru Kabir". The Council also has a resource website which may be of interest for those looking for information on Satguru Kabir Saheb and related subjects.
The Council has ten registered branches - La Caverne, Henrietta, Floreal, Paillote, Highlands, Morcellement St. Andre, Clunny, Quartier Militaire, Sebastepol and Allée Brillant, and more that 500 members all over the island.
